Krzysztof Małecki from Giżycko World Champion Representatives of Giżycko Interschool Base of Water Sports – seventeen years old Krzystof Małecki (Giżycko) and twelve years old Mikołaj Mickiewicz (Mikołajki)- have won in World Championship in Cadet class, which took place on 25th-31st of July. It is a great success, because it’s the second time in history since 1968, when Poland brought back golden medal.

Airshow Mazury 2010

Once again airshow took place in Giżycko AIRSHOW MAZURY 2010 7th and 8th of August, twelth time on Masuria, second time in Giżycko, special planes’ airshow took place above Niegocin lake. Various kinds of planes gathered on Masuria; modern and historical from I and II World War. Best polish, lithuan, czech and german pilots were showing off their aerobatics skills. Best impression on numerous audience made czech acrobatic group The Flying Bulls (4 planes- type Zling 50 LX). Main organizer of this event was Land of Lakes Aeroclub and its chairman Stanisław Tołwiśnki. We’re inviting you today to come for airshow in next year.

Folk art holiday

It has been a long time since this fair startef this year it is 23th opportunity to get to know folk art culture. 23. International Folk Fair will traditionally take place in the end of July and beginning of August (30.07 - 01.08) in Węgorzewo. Fair is a great place to become acquainted with north-eastern Polish, genuine folk culture; also with Byelorussian, Russian, Lithuanian, Latvian and Ukrainian. On the main square, there will be traditional crafts shows: forging horseshoe, clay and wooden sculptures, looming, candle wares, processing amber and many others. On the stage, during 3 days of fair, a splendid ensemble of folk music band stars. In Węgorzewo, there’s possibility to buy original, artistic, handicraft wares.

Season opening in Giżycko

The beginning of May is traditionally also the great beginning of sailing season. Giżycko has welcomed the season with an annual boat parade... The traditional opening of the new season took place on the 2nd of May. The celebrations, which began with opening of historical drawbridge on Łuczanski canal, gathered a few thousand people. Other events of the day included a boat parade along with competition for the best decorated boat. The winning boat was 'The Masurian Ugly One' (see the picture below).

Summer events in Ełk

Summer season is coming, so here is some info on what will be going on in Ełk in the coming months... Here are the most interesting events: Gwiazda Mazurska (The Masurian Star) Cycling Race - 3rd to 6th of June hundreds of bicycle fans from all over the country will meet in Ełk to take part in a marathon race for amateurs. TĘCZA (The Rainbow) International Children's and Youth Folk Festival - surely one of most colorful and amazing events, organized every year in Ełk. Among the Festival's guests are groups from many cultures and places in the world. It takes place between 24th and 27th June. Festiwal Ogień i Woda (Fire and Water Festival) - street performers, fire dancers and water sports will meet in Ełk on 16th and 17th of July. Main event is a night fire show competition. Mazurskie Zawody Balonowe (Masurian Ballooning Competition) - this is an excellent opportunity to view amazing Masurian landscapes from above. Between 5th and 8th of August more than 50 balloon crews from Poland and abroad will fly on Masurian sky!

National Mourning in Masurian Lake District

After the tragic events in Smolensk forest, people of Masurian Lakeland have took part in commemorations... The crash of presidential plane in Russia took life of many people, including MP from Masurian region - Mr Aleksander Szczygło, also a chief of National Security Bureau. On squares and in churches tens of thousands gathered on ceremonies commemorating those who lost their lives in this tragic accident.

Spring on Great Masurian Lakes.

First signs of spring can be found all across the Masurian Land... Although snow has melted quickly in the recent days, most lakes are still covered in thick ice. Temperatures are reaching 16 degrees Celsius and thickness of ice is around 20 centimeters! This makes perfect conditions for iceboating. Along with spring came first storks. These birds are typical for Masurian landscapes and their arrival definitely means the winter is over.

World Iceboating Championships cancelled.

Heavy snowfalls have prevented organizing the Championships on lake Niegocin... This winter is tough in Masurian Lake District and so is the ice on lake Niegocin - third biggest lake in Poland. Large amounts of snow that has fallen almost everywhere in Masurian Land made it impossible to race the iceboats. World Iceboating Championships have been moved, nevertheless Masurian ice sailors are looking forward to race later this winter...

This February lake Niegocin will host international iceboating Championships in Monotype class... This winter is tough in Masurian Lake District and so is the ice on lake Niegocin - third biggest lake in Poland. It will be the place of bothy World and European Championship of Monotype class iceboats. These large units will be racing between 19 and 21 February. Rydzewo and Black Swan Inn will be the base of this awesome event, organised by Dutch Monotype Association.

Snow has fallen and most of the lakes are frozen... Although temperatures are around zero degrees Celsius, snow has covered hills, forests and towns and ice can be found on most of the lakes. This makes perfect opportunities for fans of such winter sports as cross-country skiing or ice sailing. Ice boats on Great Masurian Lakes.

Monotype Ice Boats will return this winter on Masurian Lakes... In February 2009 Lake Niegocin hosted World Champinoship in Monotype Ice Boat racing. The boat's base was nearby village of Rydzewo. The monotypes are real classics of ice racing. These double-seated ice boats were very popular in the first half of 20th century but after some time they were replaced with modern constructions of DN class. In recent years the popularity of monotypes had suddenly risen - old boats are getting renovated and new ones are being built. With proper atmospheric conditions it is very possible that this February Rydzewo will once again welcome all monotypes fans.

Construction of the biggest yacht port on Masurian Lakes has just recently started in Gizycko... Construction of the biggest yacht port on the Masurian Lakes has just recently started in Giżycko, central point of the main sailing route. Value of this project is around €4.3 M. 50% of that sum comes from European Union, while the rest from the town's budget. This modern port will be able to admit 136 boats along with 168 cars and 4 buses on its parking. Buildings in the port area will contain sailor shops, conference rooms, workshops and other useful facilities. The construction is scheduled to be complete in October 2010.

Masurian Lake District will be present on some major European touristic events... One of such events will be Touristik & Caravaning International, held in Lepizig, Germany, between 18th and 21st November. You can find there a representation of Warmian-Masurian Touristic Organisation, promoting our region. Complete information on similar events will be published on our site soon!

Masurian Lakes among new 7 Wonders of Nature? It's possible! New Seven Wonders Foundation (based in Switzerland) has just published a list of 28 candidates for the seven most beautiful places in the world. Amazonian forests, Grand Canion, Galapagos Isles and... Masurian Lake District! Local authorities, representing towns and counties of the region have gathered in the heart of Masurain Lakes - Giżycko. Here, on a ship's deck, they were waiting for the official results of the competition. The authorities had every reason to be happy - Masurian Lake District has reached the final. It is now up to Internet users to decide, which places will end up in the final 7. The final results will be published in 2011.
